CANARDS: THE MYTHS AND THE REALITIES
Keywords:
Aerodynamics, Structures, DesignAbstract
This paper compares the merits of canard configurations versus conventional aircraft with horizontal stabilizers in the rear. Drag, stability and control, the stall, performance, and weight and balance considerations are addressed. Test results of flying prototypes support the findings of computational aerodynamic studies. Of principal interest are two motor glider experiments. There is no evidence that a canard configuration can equal the performance, handling qualities and structural efficiency of the conventional aircraft.Downloads
