Abstract
I am happy to welcome Prof. Dr. Zafer Aslan, from the Beykoz Logistics School of Higher Education, Istanbul, Turkey, to Technical Soaring as an Associate Editor supervising the review of scientific papers. This appointment occurred because recently Prof. Aslan was designated Chair, Scientific Section by the OSTIV Board. She replaces long-time chair Dr. Hermann Trimmel. For many years, Prof. Aslan has been a regular participant at OSTIV Congresses and a frequent contributor to Technical Soaring.
This issue begins with the last published paper from the XXVIII OSTIV Congress, Eskilstuna, Sweden, 8-15 June 2006. The Myschik and Sachs paper presents a study of a useful wind measurement system for light aircraft and sailplanes that uses miniaturized navigation sensors.
This issue continues the publication of papers presented at the XXIX OSTIV Congress, Lüsse-Berlin, Germany, 6-13 August 2008. The Thorbeck paper documents the significant contributions of gliding research to all of aviation. The Gedeon paper breaths new life into a dormant method of calculating fatigue of glider components. The Gäb, et al. paper presents intriguing new methods for moving the control surfaces of large sailplanes. Finally, the Emck and Jackson paper should help pilots become more comfortable in the cockpit.
The following Associate Editors located the reviewers and supervised the reviews of the manuscripts in this issue: Mark Maughmer (Myschik and Sachs, Gäb and co-authors), Ward Hindman (Thorbeck), Helmut Fendt (Gedeon) and Ian Olaker (Emck and Jackson). To assure accuracy of the manuscripts, each senior author received a ‘galley-proof’ for corrections-only prior to publication.
I applaud the team that made this issue possible in a timely manner: associate editors, peer-reviewers authors, copy-editor/layout, printers and distributors. Thank you!
Finally, you are encouraged to send comments on papers to me so a useful dialogue with the author(s) can occur in Technical Soaring.
