STRUCTURE OF THE CONVECTIVE BOUNDARY LAYER DERIVED FROM LARGE-EDDY SIMULATIONS
Keywords:
Meteorology, Atmospheric physicsAbstract
A large-eddy simulation model is applied to free convection in the atmosphere. Contour plots of instantaneous fields and of conditionally sampled updraft events are presented based on 160 x 150 x 48 grid cells. It turns out that in the case of homogeneous surface heating convection below 0.5 zi is organized along lines forming a spoke pattern. Under inhomogeneous conditions, this pattern is less pronounced. Isolated updrafts prevail in the upper chimneys by small scale bubbles.Downloads
