Abstract

The presented basic information on the stretched-membrane sail-wing and some possible applications permits us to state that the tendency to reduce the speed of a flying vehicle of fixed wing area without high-lift devices leads at present to the stretched-rnembrane sailwing concept as the best and unique solution.  However, a stretched-membrane sailwing represents a development trend of wing design completely different from the conventional. There is only one danger that designers, as well as users, accustorned to the tradltional wing shapes and design solutions may be offended with lts rather queer shape and take it for a technical joke! Unfortunately, avia-tlon technology has nothing better to offer at the monent for low flight speeds than this 'joke'.
